Airport Master Plan, Commercial & Retail Development

Client
Aeroporti di Roma

Period of Service
2010 – 2015

Project Description
In 2010, CAI was engaged by Aeroporti di Roma (ADR), to prepare a conceptual master plan for the long term development of Rome Fiumicino Airport up to the year 2044, that would create a capacity of 100 million passengers per annum. The conceptual master plan defined the expansion of the airport towards the north, through two new parallel runways and passenger terminal facilities, in an area now called Fiumicino North. CAI was subsequently appointed to review the development of the detailed master plan for Fiumicino North that was completed in 2012.

In 2014, CAI was engaged by ADR again – this time to reconfigure the retail layout and propose product mix for Terminal 1 of Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) up to the year 2023. CAI collaborated with ADR to conduct a comprehensive passenger survey. To include FCO as part of the immersive travel experience to Rome, insights on passenger profiles, behaviours and preferences were used to assess and counter the competition from airports and downtown shopping, improve passenger flow, including placement of airport facilities so as to optimise dwell time. Information from the survey was also used to configure the retail layout to right size the commercial areas to traffic and optimise visibility, penetration and conversion.
