Succcess Story

KING FAHD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

CAI had a multi-year operations and management agreement with King Fahd International Airport (KFIA) in Dammam, Saudi Arabia from 2008 to 2018 to transform, commercialise and corporatise the airport, and reverse its declining market share.

CAI worked closely with the local management team to implement a hub development programme that included airline engagement, route development, traffic management and destination marketing.

This resulted in a significant boost in passenger numbers. The airport surpassed its competitors to become the largest airport by traffic volume in its catchment, and sealed its position as a leading air hub in the region.

With the partnership, KFIA’s connectivity improved with 13 new airlines and more than double the weekly flight frequencies. Passenger numbers also more than doubled.

KFIA was recognised with a Routes Airport Marketing Award (Middle East) at the Routes Asia Conference. The airport was also named the Most Improved Airport in the Middle East, and third Best Airport by Region (Middle East), at the Airports Council International Airport Service Quality Awards.

FUKUOKA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

CAI and its partners took over the operations and management of Japan’s Fukuoka Airport in 2019.

Fukuoka Airport is the fourth largest airport in Japan by total passenger traffic.

The consortium has been tasked to transform the airport into an airport of choice for Western Japan. The goal is for the airport to welcome 35 million passengers per annum and expand its network to 100 domestic and international destinations over the next 30 years.

CAI and its partners have been working with the airport team to attract new airlines and secure new flight routes through new landing-fee structures and long-term incentives. CAI’s resident team also developed strategies to overcome slot constraints at the airport.

Fukuoka Airport has since secured several new airlines and new city links, outperforming the business case on traffic growth.

Fukuoka Airport won the Highly Commended Award (more than 20 mppa) at the Routes Asia Marketing Awards 2019. The international award recognises excellence in airport and destination marketing.

VLADIVOSTOK INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

CAI and its partners acquired Vladivostok International Airport in 2017.

Leveraging the airport’s open skies status and strategic location between Asia-Pacific and Russia’s Far East, CAI worked with the airport to launch targeted incentive programmes and marketing campaigns for airlines and tourism authorities to stimulate traffic.

Since then, the airport has launched new carriers, increased flight frequencies, and opened new city links within Russia and overseas to destinations such as China, Japan, South Korea and Thailand.

Within two years, the airport’s traffic grew 40% to 2.6 million passengers in 2018.

In recognition of its efforts, Vladivostok International won the Routes Asia 2018 Marketing Award (under 4 mppa).

The airport was also named Best Economic Project for Regional Development, and won second place for Best International Airport (up to 4 mppa) for the second consecutive year at Russia’s National Airport Infrastructure Show 2019.
