Examples of Consultancy Services

  Integrated Airport Management

Abu Dhabi International Airport

The United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) contracted CAI between 2006 and 2008 to help its local management improve operational standards and customer service quality. Traffic at the Abu Dhabi International Airport was rapidly increasing due to the aggressive expansion of its base carrier, stretching the airport beyond capacity.

While additional capacity was being developed, CAI helped to streamline and improve passenger and baggage processing. We also trained the airport employees for enhanced customer service, adding a feedback management system for sustained service excellence. We put in place a business continuity plan in the event of a major crisis. Security control procedures were also rationalised with a view to balancing proper security screening with smooth passenger processing.

These measures were validated. The airport was the first in the UAE to pass the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s Security Audit, and won the Aviation Business Award for Airport Security in 2007.

  Hub and Route Development

King Fahd International Airport

In 2008, CAI was engaged to help King Fahd International Airport (KFIA) in Damman, Saudi Arabia, to reverse its declining market share. This is part of a six-year management contract to transform, commercialise and corporatise the airport. We worked with the local management team to implement a hub development programme that included airline engagement, route development and destination marketing.

In 2010, KFIA’s improved route development programme was recognised at the 8th Routes Asia Conference with the Routes Airport Marketing Award - Middle East Category.

By 2012, the total number of operating airlines and passenger traffic at KFIA had increased by 50 percent, and city links were up 25 percent. KFIA had effectively regained its market share and reversed the decline before 2008.

  Commercial and Retail Development

Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport

CAI has been working with Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CSIA) since 2004. We first balanced passenger flow at the airport’s Terminal 1 finger piers to increase its concession area by 70 percent. Improved product mix, shopfront re-design and rental restructuring led to the doubling of rental revenue per passenger in two years.

We subsequently enhanced passenger flow in CSIA’s Terminal 2 by reconfiguring the domestic security screening process and creating a retail layout area of 25,000 square metres.

Following these improvements, CSIA is better poised to capitalise on the commercial potential of its tremendous growth. CSIA is now the largest hub in central-western China and is listed as a national level air hub on par with Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou airports.

  Efficiency and Service Quality

Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport

In 2009, Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport (CJIA), an emerging regional hub, appointed CAI to improve its transfer operations and way-finding system. This was on the back of a previous successful collaboration.

After careful review of CJIA’s transfer-passenger flow, process, facilities and efficiency standards, we recommended changes to shorten Minimum Connecting Time at the airport. CAI also implemented improved service and passenger flows following detailed assessment of CJIA’s way-finding system, passenger movements and behaviour.

These efforts contributed to CJIA receiving the 2011 “Best Airport” Award in the 15-25 million passenger category and “Best Improvement Airport in Asia Pacific” Award from the Airports Council International.

  Airport Planning and Engineering

Tancredo Neves International Airport

In 2008, Tancredo Neves International Airport (TNIA) in Brazil’s third largest city, Belo Horizonte, breached its capacity of 5 million on the back of tremendous growth.

Consequently, Secretariat of Economic Development (SEDE) of Minas Gerais appointed CAI in 2009 to develop the airport’s master plan, taking into consideration SEDE’s vision of an “Airport City” with TNIA as a major hub. We reviewed TNIA’s land use and facilities; air traffic forecast; economic, socio-political and regulatory frameworks; and conducted an overall cost-benefit analysis.

SEDE re-appointed CAI in 2010 to develop the concept design and tender documentation for the proposed TNIA Terminal 2, in preparation for Belo Horizonte’s role as a host city for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

  Human Capital Development

King Fahd International Airport

Employees of Saudi Arabia’s King Fahd international Airport (KFIA) have been undergoing training and development under CAI since 2008. We train KFIA’s senior management and middle level managers in best practices for several aspects of leadership, management and airport operations.

High potential employees are also identified early and nurtured to drive KFIA’s strategic initiatives. They attend a customised Airport Professional Development Programme in Singapore to cultivate the mindset and develop the requisite operational, service and management skills as future leaders of KFIA.
