India, Durgapur Aerotropolis
Durgapur Aerotropolis is India’s first privately-managed airport city in the Durgapur-Asansol region of Bardhaman district in the West Bengal state of India.
Changi Airports International’s (CAI) first investment in an airport development project in India, involves the setting up of an industrial park, a logistics hub and an IT park with supporting infrastructure such as housing, tourism, healthcare and social interchange facilities.
While the airport is developed over 650 acres, the supporting industrial and social infrastructure will be developed over 1,350 acres.
Durgapur-Asansol is one of the most centrally-located industrial zones in eastern India. While Asansol is fast emerging as a trade and commerce destination, Durgapur is emerging as a manufacturing, educational, IT and logistics hub.
A major centre of coal mining, Durgapur is located at the site of an integrated steel plant complex besides an alloy steel plant. The region is well served by a major railway and road network.
CAI has a 30 percent stake in Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Limited (BAPL), the specialist company formed for the development of the Durgapur Aerotropolis.
The airport was named Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport after a famous poet by the Honourable West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in 2013.
Following the calibration flight conducted by Airports Authority of India in March 2015, BAPL went on to secure the aerodrome licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation a month later, making it India’s first operational private greenfield airport under the country’s Greenfield Airport Policy.
It is the only greenfield airport operational out of the 15 airports which were notified under the policy. The airport welcomed the first commercial flight (Air India) on 18 May 2015.
